Frequently asked

ESA funding questions

Can I buy things before ESA funds arrive?

New to ESA?

You can start spending as soon as you sign the contract: pay out of pocket, then submit for reimbursement once the ClassWallet account is funded.

Signing for next school year? Purchases start July 1, even if you signed the contract earlier.

Already on ESA?

Use any rollover funds in ClassWallet while you wait for the next deposit. No rollover? Pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement when the account is funded.

Shop before funds drop

Pathfinder Card holders have been able to spend on ESA-allowable items since Oct 1, before Q2 funds arrive, without spending out of pocket3. All ESA families can apply for the card.

  1. Check if an item is ESA-allowable
  2. Pay with the Pathfinder Card
  3. Submit for reimbursement in seconds

How much is an ESA award?

Awards vary. Many general-education awards are about $7,000 a year, paid in four quarterly deposits. The exact amount depends on the annual state budget, disability status, and your school district, and it’s in the ESA approval email, contract and account.

Q2 looks different?

Your child’s award may be based on last school year’s funding amounts. Current year’s funding is finalized in Q1, so the award may go up or down slightly, or stay the same.

I’m new to ESA. When do I get funded?

After you sign the contract, it takes about 3–6 weeks to set up and fund the ClassWallet account. For contracts signed July–March, funding starts with the quarter you sign and covers the rest of that school year. Contracts signed April–June are for the next school year, starting July 1.

Do unused ESA funds roll over?

Yes. Funds left at the end of the fiscal year (June 30) roll over, as long as you sign the renewal contract, which ADE sends on or before May 1. You must sign and submit it by June 30.

By May 1

ADE sends the renewal contract.

June 30

Sign and submit the renewal. Unused funds roll over into the new fiscal year.
